Beautiful illustrations of what is below the famous Russian landmarks.
To promote Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, Saatchi & Saatchi Russia created an incredibly beautiful campaign showing what’s below the famous Russian Landmarks: Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Bolshoi Theatre.
Fujitsu’s “FingerLink Interaction System” Makes Dumb Paper Smart.
I’ve simplistically assumed we would advance from “dumb” paper with things printed on it to some smarter variant, where every sheet of paper is an iPad. But as researchers at Fujitsu Laboratories demonstrate here, there’s still plenty of room to design new interfaces that are between those two extremes.
By combining an ordinary webcam, a computer and an off-the-shelf projector, Fujitsu’s “FingerLink Interaction System” provides a new user interface that effectively turns a “dumb” piece of paper, and the table it’s sitting on, into a touchscreen. Check out how they did it, and peep the CAD demo starting around 2:43.
I love that they’ve cobbled this together from humble parts; it reminds me of kids in the Bronx inventing hip hop with a turntable and a bunch of old records. I also found it amusing that despite the coolness and potential of the technology, they’ve got such pedestrian aspirations for the system: “We think this system could be used to show detailed information at a travel agent’s counter,” explains Taichi Murase, a research in Fujitsu’s Media Service System Lab, “or when you need to fill in forms at City Hall.”
It’s always nice to browse some nice and clean websites. It is a good way to get inspiration for future projects and also to see how designers are delivering.

Worth watching: Facebook Product developer explains about designing social experiences.
Paul Adams: How to Design Social Experiences
The web is evolving, orienting around people rather than content. As a result, almost all UX professionals will increasingly need to design social experiences. Designing interactions between people is different from designing user experiences. For example there is often no clear task to design for, no set user goal, and no clear outcome.
To complicate matters further, people’s sense of identity and the social interactions they have with others are subtle and nuanced. This means you can never predict how people will respond to what you create for them. Not only does this uncertainty mean that we need a very different approach to product development to be successful, it means that we need to be ready to iterate in real time – to change what we have launched almost immediately after we have launched it.
Paul will talk about the social design process, how it differs from classic user-centred design methods, and will explain why he thinks UX professionals will need to change how they work to be successful in the future.
